October 25, 2012Washington vs. Western Washington Post-Game Quotes
UW 88, Western Washington 78
Alaska Airlines Arena
Oct. 24, 2011
Washington Head Coach Lorenzo Romar
We've been very fortunate over the last few years to play some opponents in this exhibition game that have really really been able to help us. This was really really good. You can see why those guys were national champions last year-very good basketball team. I thought we got a lot out of this game. I thought our offense was a little ahead of our defense tonight, but I think that will come with time.
On C.J. Wilcox's performance:
C.J. Wilcox had an outstanding game. If you take his points away he still rebounded, stole the ball, deflected the ball, he defended, he took charges-a really complete game. When your best players are there they need to step up like that. That's what you expect from guys that have been in the program and know what they're doing. You hope that 's what they end up doing. He wouldn't have had to do all that he did tonight and he still would have had a great game.
On defending down the stretch:
We began to double team the on-ball at the end, but prior to that down the stretch, our guys did turn it up defensively. We just have to make that effort last for longer periods of time. I think we'll make progress. We know exactly how to guard, it's just a matter of being consistent with it. We'll be there.
On Andrew Andrews' performance:
Andrew played a very good basketball game. I've been saying all along that this is just an exhibition game so who knows what's going to happen. Much was made that we didn't get any recruits. Well, find me a freshman guard that goes out and does that. He played with a lot of confidence and a lot of boldness out there.
On high post offense:
I thought our guys did a pretty good job running it. We got some really good looks at the basket. There were times late in the game where we-panic wouldn't be the word-were negligent and got out of it. A little like a boxer who goes away from his game plan of jabbing and just throwing wild punches and gets knocked out. That's what we started to do. That's the sort of thing that may happen early in these kinds of games that we'll be able to fix. But I thought our guys did a good job. I thought we ran it pretty good for it being an exhibition game.
On experimenting with 4 position:
We just gave everyone a chance tonight, everyone a look. I thought Shawn Kemp played a nice game. He looked very comfortable out there. I thought he played that four spot at times with ease.
Any surprise with how competitive that team was?
No. They won the national championship last year. Coach warned us that they were a team that was not going to let up. They were down 9 points at half and they came back and tied us, we kind of expected it, it shows that we have a lot of work to do.
Did you expect a lot of threes from their bigs?
They are a really good shooting team; that was in the scout. Some of the toughest teams to play against are those with 5 shooters on the floor. It is something we have got to work on, we have to learn how to defend the three better.
First time out with the high-post offense, thoughts:
I think we did pretty well with it. I think we got some good shots off of it and we got some open looks for our shooters and our bigs. I think we are coming along with it.
How was your flow, first time back home:
The first game is always kind of off. You are always pretty nervous the first game, a lot of expectations for where this team is going to be. I thought we came out and got to see where we are at and see what we need to work on.
Strategy with rebounding:
We need people to rebound and me and Scott are going to be that next guy to step up and get our share of the rebounds.
Purpose of the game to see what you need to work on:
The point of these exhibition games is to see where we are at and what we need to work on, we have plenty of time. Keep working on our defense, keep working on our rebounding and get to where we want to be and keep making progress at the same time.
On getting extended time in the first half with Abdul on the bench:
I have been running the B-team all of last year and this year, if he goes out I am all by myself, so I feel pretty comfortable especially with C.J. and Scott on the wings, they make it easy for me. It was all about getting reps and getting comfortable with it.
On having the hot hand:
I just take what the defense gives me, that is always how I have played, if something is open I will take it and also try and get these guys shots. I am aggressive, so I expect to score, but at the same time I just take what is there.
Western Washington Head Tony Dominguez
On the game:
I think we came out a little tentative to start the game, a little shocked on how long and athletic they were. We got in there at halftime, made some adjustments and calmed down and played some ball. The last minute and a half I think we unraveled. It was a good effort as a preseason game. It gave us some stuff to work on.
On becoming head coach:
It's exciting. I'm very happy for Coach Jackson and I think that was a tremendous opportunity. I'm 40 years old and I'm ready to be a head coach. I'm excited for the opportunity and it's a great school and I have great guys to do it with.
On playing against UW in Seattle:
It was a great experience. I'm from the area, Bellevue, so I've been to a lot of games here, so it was really nice to be in this gym and play on this court. They've had a lot of really good teams so we feel real lucky to have an opportunity to play against these guys and maybe next time we can get the win.
On playing Duke next:
That's another game of a lifetime that we dream about as a kid, playing at Cameron Indoor. And they're a great team and we get to play against arguably the best coach that has ever lived, Coach K, so that's going to be a real good test. Hopefully we will get the win because we don't want to start the season 0-2. It will be a really good challenge. We really didn't try to think too much of (the next game against Duke) it, we really tried to focus against UW. Coach Dominguez does a really good job of telling us to go from "broad to narrow". So we have to take our end goals and take it one game at a time, play each possession the best that we can and not try to get distracted too much.
On new head coach Tony Dominguez
He's not really new. He's been the assistant/associate the last 17 years at Western. He's a great coach and we obviously miss Coach Jackson. UW is lucky to have him. He has a great basketball mind. But coach Dominguez has done a really great job of getting us ready in a short amount of time.
