Pinkel staying at Missouri
He was never offered the head coaching position at Washington but Missouri's Gary Pinkel is taking his name out of consideration.
The long-time Tiger coach is enjoying big success in Missouri's second year in the Southeastern Conference. Pinkel took some pressure last year for a rough transition as Missouri missed out on a bowl game, a rarity in recent history.
On Thursday he made a guest appearance on ESPN's Mike & Mike program and told the two hosts that he's staying put.
He said he understood why some would link his name to the job opening at Washington.
"That's because I coached there for 12 years and Don James is my mentor and all those things. I'll be quite frank, I'm staying at the University of Missouri.
"I, with the administration's help, can continue to build a national program and a quest for national championships. I'm a Missouri Tiger, and I'm going to stay a Missouri Tiger."
Pinkel was mentioned frequently as a potential candidate after Steve Sarkisian left for the USC position, but that was not based on any inside, credible information that he would be approached.
