Iowa offers 2012 prospect
With a busy summer behind him, Mike Gesell has been hitting a few college campuses this fall and on Saturday he made his way to Iowa City for the first time to meet with the Iowa coaches. Upon his arrival he met with Coach Lickliter on Saturday morning and he had a bit of exciting news to give the talented 2012 prospect.
"Coach Lickliter offered me a scholarship this morning," he said. "It was pretty exciting, but it is always exciting to get an offer from a good school."
The 5-foot-11 and 165 pound guard had already received scholarship offers from Iowa State, Nebraska, Creighton, and Northern Iowa and is in no rush to make a decision. With the Hawkeyes, along with other schools, already offering Marcus Paige and Adam Woodbury, two of his AAU teammates, does that influence his decision-making process?
"We are actually all good friends and AAU teammates, but I'm not going to go somewhere just because they are going there. I want to make the right decision for myself and I know they will do the same thing," Gesell said.
Since this is his first trip to Iowa City, Gesell and his parents were taking in the whole game day atmosphere on a football Saturday and he gave it a very positive review.
"It's a cool place. I really like being in Carver Hawkeye Arena and we have met a lot of nice people and it was great going around to the tailgaters and meeting some of the people here."
With his sophomore season just around the corner, Gesell, who averaged 15 points at game at South Sioux City (Neb) High School, is working to improve his overall game.
"I have been working on my overall skill set, mid-range game, and getting to the basket more and finishing," Gesell said.
