Collins chooses Tide over LSU

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. | Less than a week before the two teams square off for a national championship, the University of Alabama scored a major recruiting victory over LSU when the Crimson Tide snatched five-star Landon Collins out of the Tigers' backyard.

Collins, a native of Geismar, La., committed to Alabama during the Under Armour All-America Game in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Thursday night.

The 6-foot, 200-pound safety was coveted by both schools throughout the process, but ultimately, it was the feeling he got when he stepped on UA's campus and the chance to learn and develop under head coach Nick Saban that was the difference.

"When I step on the campus, when I go to the school, no matter what, I feel at home," Collins told TideSports.com earlier in the week. "It feels like a quiet place for me. That's what I've grown up under, a quiet home. I didn't really do too much. I stayed to myself, and that's how I like to be. I also love the coaching staff and the boys that I talk to up there."

Collins visited Tuscaloosa in November when LSU defeated Alabama 9-6 in overtime. After spending the week in Orlando for the Under Armour game, he plans to return home with his family on Sunday and attend the BCS title game Monday night.

The Rivals100 star wouldn't give a prediction but believes it will be a different type of game the second time around.

"I can't give you a prediction, but I don't think it will be as low scoring again because I think they got something for each other," Collins said. "They have the packages ready for that game because they've had more time to prepare."

Collins becomes the third five-star commitment in the Crimson Tide's class, joining wide receiver Eddie Williams and running back T.J. Yeldon.

Williams, who also played in the secondary at the Under Armour game, plans to switch to receiver when he gets to Alabama, leaving Collins as the lone safety commit in the class.
