Illinois lineman to visit Michigan State

One of the top linemen in the Land of Lincoln for the class of 2013 is Josh Augusta of Peoria High School in Illinois. SpartanMag.com was able to catch up with the 6-foot-4, 280-pound prospect and got some details on his recruitment.

The last few years Michigan State has used outstanding defensive line play to help them reach the top of the Big Ten. Mark Dantonio and his staff want to continue to compete for championship and recognize that high-quality defensive linemen are necessary to do just that. Augusta is one of the players the staff is recruiting for the class of 2013 and he could receiver a Spartan offer soon. We spoke with him about his scholarships.

"I have 6 offers," he said. "I was just offered by Oklahoma. I also have offers from Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Memphis and Louisiana-Monroe."

In addition to the schools that have offered, Augusta is hearing regularly from program such as Michigan State, Wisconsin and Nebraska. August has been busy playing basketball, but intends on using the next few weeks to visit several schools."
Over spring break I plan on visiting some schools. I plan on going to Michigan and Michigan State. I also will be visiting Iowa and Illinois. I would like to visit some other as well; it all depends on my schedule.

August is a 3-sport athlete for Peoria High School so that keeps him very busy. He is now starting track after finishing up his season on the hardwood. August actually has the ability to compete in both the field events (shot and Disc) as well as run the relays (4x100 and 4x200)

With a solid list of offers already at his disposal and several other heavyweight schools closely evaluating him, Spartanmag.com asked Augusta is any schools are standing out and what he is looking for.
'I do not have a favorite right now," he said." Academics are very important to me. I want to major in business."

Gates went on to tell us that the feedback he has receiver from coaches is that they like the intensity he shows on the field and his work ethic. One reason the Spartans surely like him is due to his versatility.

Though he is listed as being 6-foot-5, 275-pounds in eth Rivals.com database, August informed us that 6-foot-4, 280 was a more accurate. His size and speed allows him to play multiple positions on both offense and defense for Peoria High School. Many college teams see him as a defensive end prospect that could easily slide inside an play defensive tackle depending on the down and distance.

Michigan State is being very selective when it comes to defensive line scholarship offers. As of this point the Spartans have only offered 6 players listed as strongside defensive ends in the Rivals.com database. Most BCS teams have already offered double-digit prospects at that position. With Augusta it may simply be a situation of him getting on campus to receive Spartan scholarship offer from Coach Dantonio.

SpartanMag.com will be sure to follow-up with Augusta in the coming weeks. His spring break takes place in the next two weeks so that is when he will be stopping into several schools to take a closer look. We will be sure to have quotes from Augusta after he has a chance to visits East Lansing and meet the coaching staff in person.
