Spartans add nation's #1 kicker

Michigan State has addresses on of the most important needs for the class of 2013 with the top player in the nation at his position. SpartanMag.com has just confirmed that Kicker Michael Geiger of Ottawa Hills High School in Ohio has committed to Head Coach Mark Dantonio.

Geiger, who was committed to Boston College prior to the coaching change that occurred there, took an unofficial visit to Michigan State today with his family. After meeting with the staff and touring the campus, Geiger decided that Michigan State is where he wants to play his football and continue his education.

Geiger had the following to say:
"Michigan State offered me two weeks ago and I visited today and committed. I really like the integrity of the program and the incredible opportunity it provides for my future. They said I will have a legitimate chance to starts as a freshman.

The 5-foot-9, 175-pound Geiger comes highly ranked and has plenty of accolades. Rivals.com rates him the #1 kicking prospect in the nation as does Chris Sailer. Sailer runs the top kicking and punting camp in the nation His analysis of Geiger reads as follows:
"Michael is simply an outstanding kicker. He is smooth, accurate, and extremely consistent off the ground. His field goals are by far #1 in the nation. Kickoffs are also solid and is proving to be a capable punter. A great competitor that kicks well under pressure. Michael is going to be a big time college kicker. He dominated the "TOP 12" Camp."
Geiger informed us that he will make a return trip in January for his official visit. The 18th will likely be the date as that is the weekend the majority of commitments will be on campus. Geiger spoke about making his decision.
"I talked most frequently with Coach Mike Tressel, He said. After I talked with Coach Dantonio today for about 30 minutes in his office he asked me if I had any questions. I asked him how soon he would let me commit. He was surprised and them I told him I was ready to be a Spartan today."
The Spartans will graduate 3-year starter Dan Conroy after this season and though they return Kevin Muma, he will be a senior next fall. At a minimum it looks as if Geiger will start 3 if not 4 years in college. We asked Geiger about his kicking stats this past fall.
"I was 6-for-10 on field goals with a long of 54-yards. I 47 out of 52 (90%) kickoffs go for touchbacks and I was named 1st Team All-State."
The addition of Geiger cannot be understated. The Spartans needed to add a top kicker to the class and they have been evaluating several players. Geiger was not on the radar until Boston College fired Coach Spaziani. Though changing his commitment was not something Geiger had planned on doing, the opportunity to play close to home as well as compete for a starting spot for a program that has had a significant amount of success under the direction of Coach Dantonio was too good to pass up.
