Butler on a roll

With all that’s happened for Devin Butler this month he might want to consider purchasing a couple of Powerball lottery tickets.

First, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound three-star cornerback from Gonzaga High School in Washington D.C. visited Notre Dame early this month and verbally committed to the Irish after being blown away during the visit.

Then on Tuesday he received an invitation to represent Team USA in this summer’s Junior World Championships in Austin, Texas.

“It’s an honor,” Butler said. “Plenty of people play football, and a few can call themselves All-Americans, but only an elite few can say I represented the USA against the world.”

This year’s tournament will be held July 5-8 with team practice beginning June 28.

The USA won the inaugural tournament in 2009.

Before Butler dons the red, white and blue jersey he’s got some unfinished business at Gonzaga.

As a junior he recorded 46 tackles, picked off six passes and broke up another 12. He returned one of his interceptions for a touchdown.

He hopes to do even better as a senior.

This weekend Butler will return to South Bend for Notre Dame’s annual Blue-Gold Game.

“Of course, I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” he said. “I was just talking to the other commits about it.”

Butler said he and James Onwualu, Steve Elmer, Malik Zaire and Corey Robinson have big plans for the weekend.

“I’m getting up there on Friday night and leaving on Sunday morning,” he said. “We’re planning to get out with the players after the game.”

Saturday’s game begins at 1:30 p.m.
