San Antonio is defensive line friendly for Bears

Greater San Antonio is settling in nicely as fertile ground for the Baylor coaching staff to find dominating defensive linemen.

Junior defensive end Chris McAllister could be in line for a big 2012 and is from Converse Judson. Baylor's most heralded recruit from the 2012 class is San Antonio Sam Houston defensive end Javonte Magee.

Now, comes four-star San Antonio Madison defensive end Vincent Taylor. The vast roots that Baylor assistant coach Chris Achuff has laid in the Alamo City are noteworthy.

There's a lot to like about No. 233 recruit in the Rivals 250. He's big at 6-3, 277 and he likes the idea of bookending with Magee or backing him up.

"Javonte and I came to San Antonio from New Orleans after [Hurricane] Katrina, and he I get along really great,'' Taylor said. "It would be pretty cool with him being on one side and me being on the other so we can clog things up in the middle.''

Taylor has fielded several offers and seen some recent interest from TCU and Michigan. But he admits that Baylor is "probably at the top of my list.'' Taylor said Achuff came by last week during the football program's athletic period to see how things were progressing.

Admittedly, if he was a senior about four years ago and Baylor came by, he probably wouldn't have considered the Bears. But with the program's resurgence, his respect for and potential desire to come to the program has transcended what he and arguably many other recruits have thought about Art Briles' program.

He will be a three-year starter for Madison. But his size lends him to playing defensive tackle. His strength is just overpowering offensive linemen as a bull rusher. That should change when he gets to college. But the weight training program could be only refinement. He benches 405, squats 445 and power cleans 265.

"If I have a good season, maybe I can be a five-star recruit,'' said Taylor, who went to Baylor's Jan. 29 junior day.

And Taylor is getting the early message how he needs to ahead of the academic and admissions curve. He's taking the SAT on May 5. At that time, he should have a better feel where he is going with his commitment decision. Madison starts spring football on Wednesday and concludes with its spring game the week of May 19.

"I'm very interested in Baylor,'' Taylor said. "Houston has been on me pretty hard too. I've done my research on Baylor and know how good that program has become.''
