The Numbers Game: Arizona

The Huskies' latest loss wasn't pretty and the stat sheet bears that out.

It was all downhill after Travis Coons booted a 43-yard field go through the uprights to give Washington a 3-0 lead. From that point Arizona raced out to a 24-3 lead, and the Huskies never really slowed Rich Rod's offense down.

Let's take a look at the numbers that tell the story.

The Good

  • 4.3 yards per carry. That's what the Huskies averaged. Not great, and probably not quite good enough against Arizona's defense, but pretty good.

  • 16 catches, 190 yards and a touchdown. That was the combined stat line for Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Kasen Williams.

The Bad

  • 10 penalties for 100 yards. You aren't going to win games when you're giving your opponent an entire football field.

  • Washington ran the ball 29 times but had 52 pass attempts. Not the kind of balance you want. On the flipside, Arizona ran the ball 49 times and only attempted 22 passes.

  • Arizona only punted two times the entire game.

  • Washington was 2/4 in the red zone. Both scores were touchdowns. But not good enough.

  • Washington surrendered four sacks without getting to Matt Scott once.

  • Arizona's yards per passing attempt: 11.6. Compare that to 4.9 for Washington.
