Huskies 4-0 in Pac-12: Quotes

Washington coach Lorenzo Romar

Overview:

The defensive end of the floor did it for us. Our guys came out active early and dialed in and focused and set the tone for the rest of the game. Our guys did a nice job tonight defending individually and as a team. That's a good Colorado team?we know what they're capable of. We knew it was going to be a tough challenge and our guys stepped up I thought.

On rebounding improvements:

If we'd have played them when we played Colorado St, they would have dominated us on the boards. I keep repeating myself, but I don't know any other answer other than we're a team now, our full team is together, we have great understanding of what we're doing. And I think that rebounding, defending, taking care of the ball, it all ties in together. I think that's why we're seeing some differences.

On team's gritty personality:

Before the season started, I think I had mentioned that this group was perhaps the most coachable and had the best chemistry of any team that we've had. I didn't say it was the best team, just chemistry. That's the reason we're able to do that. We don't have several guys sulking because they're not getting more shots. We're all for one and one for all. Sorry I couldn't be more creative?that's just how it is.

On winning "ugly":

You can color it any way you want to color it. I just know that when you go out and you play two games in a row and you have single digit turnovers, you hold four teams to under 40% from the field, you outrebound three out of the four, you're beginning to do things right. The only "ugly" thing if you want to call it that is that we haven't been making shots. Two out of the last four games we haven't made shots. Other than that, I think we're doing everything else ok.

On anticipating the defensive effort:

I saw that one day we'd be a good defensive team if we put forth the effort and concentrated, but I don't think that we've ever had a team that held four teams under forty percent. That part I didn't see coming, because we've never done it before.

On impact of watching film of old Husky teams:

Maybe it did. I know it had an effect on Desmond, because you could see after he watched those films he was picking up early like Bobby Jones used to do. A couple of guys have seen that. I just think that we have some veteran guys on this team who have been playing in this defensive system three or four years, so they understand it. And what we have now been able to get are some defensive playmakers. Aziz N'Diaye and Simmons have become defensive playmakers, and CJ, Scott, Abdul, and even Andrew are now making plays on the defensive end. It's been contagious. But again, I think the biggest reason is that we have experience playing this type of defense, and when everybody came together, it finally clicked in.

Sr., Scott Suggs

On the game:

We played confidently. I think both teams played very well defensively. It was good for us to come out on top in the beginning. They're a good team and they made some good runs. But I think overall, we played pretty solid on defense and limited them on taking good shots.

Playing back at home after 3-0 road start:

We talked about just making sure we don't let that get to us. We don't talk about backs being against the wall on the road. We practice a lot this week.

On last year's UW-Colorado game:

There wasn't too much mentioned about that game. We just talked about this game. We knew they were coming here try to start a winning streak and they had some confidence. We didn't want to be that team that started it for them.

Sr., Abdul Gaddy

On team's performance:
It was good, we're getting better every game. Today was very physical?they're a physical team. I know last year when we played them it felt like they had an advantage over us physically. Coming into this game we knew that we had to be very physical, especially by boxing them out.

On picking it up defensively:
It's both our attitude and us figuring things out. We take pride in our defense, we don't like when people score on us. We're really starting to gel which is the main thing, we're talking to each other and we have Aziz in the back which really helps since he alters shots. We're really startin to get organized on defense; we know when to box out, who to pick up, the little things. We're getting better.

On the crowd:
We hadn't played here in a while so I was anxious to get back out on the court. We've all always loved our crowd.

On Aziz going out:
Yeah, I notice the difference and I've said that since the beginning of the year. We need Aziz on the floor. We have players that come in who are doing better, Jernard came in and helped us out. Shawn came in today and did well, he could do better. We always need Aziz because he's our catalyst back there to get rebounds and he's a great defender

On Jernard playing:
Jernard is a great player and we look at the guys that come off the bench, Jernard, Shawn, and Andrew specifically, we need those guys to come in with energy. They've been giving us that energy all year especially during conference play. We tell them that the games not all about the starters, we can't play for forty minutes. They always come in and play well, giving great energy. Jernard is a different type of forward in that he can catch a high post and score. He can knock down a midrange jumper. We always have to tell him to stay aggressive since this is still a new thing for him as a freshman. He gave us great energy tonight, and he'll take from there and keep helping us.

Jr., C.J. Wilcox

On scoring 25 points tonight:
It doesn't matter as long as we win. I don't care how many points I score. The main this is us winning.

On having Aziz in the back:

It gives us confidence; we're able to trust that our teammate is going to be back there. All these good guards are back there who are quick, and we know that he's going to be back there and either alter shots or block them which he was doing tonight.

On team defense:
We always knew we could play good defense, and we came into the season saying that that is what we needed to do. It just took some time to get through our heads that that is what we needed to do and we're starting to learn that, and get better game by game.

On the personality of the team that makes the team play defense instead of having high flying points:
We feed off Desmond and Aziz who are top players in rebounds. Desmond is back there as our enforcer and it helps us to continue guarding really good guards. We get our identity from those players, they really love playing defense which amps us up.

Sr., Aziz N'Diaye

On your offense catalyzing your offense:
Yes, my teammates are doing a very good job finding me on the inside and I've just been going through my moves, taking the shot, and hoping that it will fall in.

Colorado Coach Tad Boyle

On the effort on defense and rebounding

I thought our defense was good enough to win tonight. Our guys played great. We played with pride and some toughness. We lost to a good basketball team. The offensive rebounds really killed us in the second half. We had some stops and we couldn't finish the possession with getting the rebound. That hurt us. And then we put them on the foul line in the second half. For some reason we don't get to the foul line on the road. I don't know why. At home we're shooting a lot of free throws. On the road we can't get there so what it does is it puts a lot of pressure on our offense. So we need to be able to make shots and tonight we weren't very efficient offensively. But I like this team. I don't like the loss and I never will, but I liked our pride tonight. I liked our toughness and how we competed. But we need to be a little better on the road offensively and the margin for error is very small. We'll continue to improve.

Against Washington, one of the things we talked about is it is not going to come off the first penetration. It's going to come after the second or third penetration and I thought our guys were trying to make home run plays after changes on one side of the ball, or one dribble penetration. It's going to come after the kick or the next penetration and another kick, and when we did that we got some good shots. We missed some good ones in the first half. With our defense tonight and our pride, I'm proud of our guys for the way they hung in there. It got away from us at the end there and you look at a 10 point loss on the road and we couldn't shrink the lead because we couldn't score. But it wasn't because of our defense. 15 offensive rebounds in the second half were too many and the free throw line was really tough.

On Washington defensively this year compared to last year

They are so much better. I think. Last year that Wroten kid was out there trying to steal and gamble a lot, but this year they are so much more sound this year. They are so long, so athletic, they've got the big guy in the middle, you've got to score against Washington and you've got to execute against them because nothing is going to come easy. And we have to get better on the offensive side of the ball to beat teams like this.
