All Pac-10 Football Awards

The All Pac-10 Football awards were announced today and a number of Huskies received mention. Washington strong safety C.J. Wallace earned first-team honors. Linebacker Scott White was a second-teamer and the Huskies had seven players earn honorable mention: PK Michael Braunstein, P Sean Douglas, CB Dashon Goldson, DE Greyson Gunheim, WR Sonny Shackelford, QB Isaiah Stanback, OG Clay Walker.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Tailback Marshawn Lynch of California has been named Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year and cornerback Daymeion Hughes of Cal has been named Pat Tillman Defensive Players of the Year. Pete Carroll of USC has been named Coach of the Year and three defensive backs tied in voting for Freshman of the Year--Jairus Byrd of Oregon, Taylor Mays of USC and Alterraun Verner of UCLA. The award winners are selected by the Pac-10 head football coaches.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR MARSHAWN LYNCH, TB, CALIFORNIA: Lynch, a junior from Oakland, Calif., leads the Pac-10 in rushing and all-purpose yards and is co-leader with teammate DeSean Jackson in touchdowns scored. A unanimous All-Pac-10 selection, Lynch has rushed for 1,178 yards and nine touchdowns, becoming just the second player in California history to post two 1,000-yard rushing seasons. He has posted a school-record 16 100-yard rushing games. His averages of 6.3 yards per carry and 107.1 yards per game both lead the Pac-10. In addition, Lynch has 286 yards and four touchdowns receiving and 101 yards in kickoff returns to give him 1,565 all-purpose yards, an average of 142.3 yards per game. Lynch is just the third California player to be selected Pac-10 offensive player of the year and the first since quarterback Mike Pawlawski in 1991.

PAT TILLMAN DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR DAYMIEON HUGHES, CB, CALIFORNIA: Hughes, a senior from Los Angeles, Calif., leads the Pac-10 in interceptions by a large margin with eight, which ties him for second in the nation in picks. Included are two returned for touchdowns. A unanimous All-Pac-10 selection by the league's coaches, Hughes has 15 career interceptions, second all-time on the Cal list. Hughes also leads the Pac-10 in passes defended with 19 and ranks second on the Cal squad with 62 tackles. Hughes becomes just the second California player to be selected Pac-10 defensive player of the year, following cornerback Deltha O'Neal in 1998.

COACH OF THE YEAR PETE CARROLL, USC: Carroll earns Coach of the Year honors for the third time in his six years at the Trojan helm, having previously been selected in 2003 and 2005. Carroll led the Trojans to an unprecedented fifth straight Pac-10 title. Carroll has directed USC to a 10-1 record this season (with a game still to play at UCLA). The Trojans have extended their Pac-10 record home winning streak to 33 games, including 23 straight Conference wins at home, and they are a remarkable 19-0 in November during Carroll's tenure. Included in USC's record this year are wins over ranked teams Notre Dame, Arkansas, Nebraska, California and Oregon. The Trojans' only defeat this season has come by two points on the road at Oregon State on a failed two-point conversion at the end of the game. Long known as a defensive expert, it is no surprise that Carroll's Trojans currently lead the Pac-10 in scoring defense at 15.1 points per game and rank either first or second in the Conference in all the major defensive categories. Carroll is the nation's winningest active coach in terms of percentage with a mark of 64-11 (.853).

CO-FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR JAIRUS BYRD, CB OREGON; TAYLOR MAYS, FS, USC; ALTERRAUN VERNER, UCLA: Three freshmen defensive backs tied in the voting among the Pac-10 head coaches for top freshman in the league.

Byrd, a redshirt freshman from Clayton, Mo., took over as a starting cornerback at Oregon in the third game of the season and ended up tied for fourth in the Pac-10 in interceptions with four picks and ninth in the league in passes defended. His 49 tackles ranked him sixth on the Ducks' squad.

Mays, a true freshman from Seattle, Wash., took over as USC's starting free safety in the second game of the season. He has three interceptions and his 55 tackles ranks fifth on the Trojan defense.

Verner, a true freshman from Carson, Calif., played extensively in UCLA's nickel and dime packages. He picked off two passes, both returned for touchdowns of 89 and 34 yards, and ranks fifth on the Bruin defense with 44 tackles.

Note: The Pac-10 coaches vote on the above awards and ties in the voting resulted in the co-awards for freshman of the year.

In addition to individual awards, the Pac-10 coaches selected the 2006 All-Pac-10 Football Team that follows.

NOTES ON THE 2006 ALL-PAC-10 FOOTBALL TEAM

Selection Procedures: The All-Pac-10 Team is selected by the Pac-10 head football coaches.

By School: USC placed the most players on the first team with eight selections, followed by California with seven. Arizona and Oregon State were next with three.

By Class: Of the 30 first-team selections, 14 are seniors, 11 are juniors and five are sophomores. No freshmen made the first (or second) team.

Unanimous: Four players were named on the first-team ballot of all 10 coaches, three of them from California. Golden Bear CB Daymeion Hughes, TB Marshawn Lynch and DT Brandon Mebane were all unanimous selections, as was USC C Ryan Kalil.

Two-time Selections: Five players were named first-team All-Pac-10 for the second straight year.--OT Sam Baker, WR Dwayne Jarrett and C Ryan Kalil of USC and CB Daymeion Hughes and DT Brandon Mebane of California. In addition, PK Justin Medlock of UCLA was a first-team pick in 2004 and LB Michael Okwo of Stanford was a first-team selection in 2004 as a special teams player.

All-Academic: Three players were selected first-team All-Pac-10 who also were named to the first-team Pac-10 All-Academic Team--P Nick Folk of Arizona (3.22, Marketing), TE Zach Miller of Arizona State (3.84, Marketing) and LB Michael Okwo of Stanford (3.09 Philosophy & Religious Studies). Four other players were first-team All-Academic and second-team All-Pac-10--QB Alex Brink of Washington State (3.56, Sport Management), OLB Spencer Larsen of Arizona (3.51, Regional Development), ST Byron Storer of California (3.44, Mass Communications) and WR/PR Sammie Stroughter of Oregon State (3.00, Sociology).

Double Dippers: DeSean Jackson of California was selected first-team as both a wide receiver and a punt returner. Likewise, Sammie Stroughter of Oregon State was named second-team at the same positions.
