SANTA CLARA, Calif. –Jacob Bandes tried to pull his last freebie card before becoming an official member of the UW football team prior to Friday’s Pac-12 Championship Game.
The 6-foot-3 and 295-pound senior defensive tackle out of nearby Pittsburg High School, roughly 65 miles from Levi Stadium where the No. 11 Huskies face the No. 17 Utah Utes, inquired with Chris Petersen and DL coach Ikaika Malloe about getting free tickets for the game.
“Well I asked coach Petersen and coach Malloe if I could get free tickets. By NCAA rules I was not allowed to because it’s a championship game,” Bandes told TheDawgReport.com / Rivals on his way to the game Friday afternoon
Bandes didn’t think his father would way to pay for tickets to the game. Thankfully, late Thursday night, his thought turned out wrong. The Bay Area native said there is more meaning to Friday’s game beyond UW potentially winning its second Pac-12 title under Petersen.
Having one last family night together.
“I think it’s going to be really cool. I think it’s going to be the only time I get to see them in the stands. And then the next time I see them I’m going to be on the sideline as a player,” Bandes said.
One of four DT commitments for the Huskies 2019 recruiting class, Bandes is ranked as the No. 219 overall by Rivals and No. 11 tackle as one of three four-star DL set to dawn Purple and Gold next fall.
However, Friday isn’t the last time Bandes will be in another stadium before he enrolls at UW in January. Only the next gridiron he will be in another country.
Bandes was selected as one of 70 players to play in the inaugural Pro Football Hall of Fame All-Star Bowl Presented by Xenith. Held in Azul Stadium in Mexico City, Mexico, the game is part of a continued effort by the HOF to expand football into a global sport.
