Former Oregon State quarterback Jonathan Smith is returning to his alma mater as the Beavers next head coach, according to a report from The Oregonian.

The Huskies quarterbacks coach / offensive coordinator played at OSU from 1998-01 before returning as a grad assistant from 2002-03. Smith signed a two-year extension with UW worth $700,000 back in April when the school raised assistant coaches salary's following Chris Petersen's extension.

Following the 2016 season, when other coaches received two-year extensions, Smith only received a one-year extension to his initial contract. UW hired former Oregon assistant Matt Lubick as co-offensive coordinator / wide receivers coach in the spring to replace former WR coach Bush Hamdan, who left UW to become the Atlanta Falcons quarterbacks coach in February.
