Five takeaways from Washington's win over Stanford

The start of the Kalen DeBoer Era couldn't be going any better for Washington.

The Huskies are 4-0 and ranked No. 15 in the country. Their new quarterback, Indiana transfer Michael Penix Jr. is leading the entire FBS in passing at 347 yards per game (1,388 total) with 12 touchdowns and 1 interception. And the team has won each of those first four games by double figures, including the 40-22 win last week over Stanford.

Before the Huskies take on UCLA on Friday night on the road -- 7:30 p.m. on ESPN -- Dawg Report breaks down the top takeaways from the last week.

1. Mr. Reliable, Michael Penix Jr.

Michael Penix Jr. has yet to have an off week. The Huskies’ quarterback continues to play at the highest level, turning in yet another clean and efficient performance to lead the Huskies to another comfortable victory last week against the Cardinal. Penix once again displayed tremendous composure, keeping a cool head and reliably getting to the right read time and again. His ball placement is consistently on the money, setting up receivers to maximize after the catch and minimizing opportunities for defenders to make plays on the football. His connection with Rome Odunze on Saturday was stellar, with Penix delivering the receiver multiple perfectly-placed footballs to spur his big night. Penix’s anticipation as a passer is elite -- he does a great job of seeing the separation before it happens, getting the ball to his receivers right after the break in the route or right as they blow past their coverage. He showed off that ability against the Cardinal, hitting some NFL-caliber throws down the sideline and over the middle.

An early second quarter pass Penix made may have been the best of the game even though it ended up not counting. In the redzone, he located a one-on-one matchup on a wheel route and threw it with perfect timing and placement before the receiver had even gotten past his defender. The ball dropped perfectly into Giles Jackson’s bucket in the endzone, just the split second after he’d slipped past the coverage; a remarkable play only nullified by Jackson’s foot going out of bounds half a second before. Penix’s combination of traits gives him the ability to play on the same tier as the best quarterbacks in the country, and to this point he’s made the most of that talent, turning in one fantastic performance after another.

He was a little sloppy at times in this game, but he’d already helped put it squarely out of reach by the time the lapses came. His injury history makes mobility a question mark for the quarterback, and he’s had a few close shaves where he’s failed to locate a defender closing on the football, but for the most part his play has been unimpeachable. Penix finished the day completing 22 of 37 passes for 309 yards and 2 touchdowns.
