Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. came about as close as one can come to winning the Heisman Trophy, finishing a narrow second in the voting as LSU QB Jayden Daniels was revealed as the winner of college football's top prize Saturday night in New York City.
It was the closest margin of victory for the Heisman vote since 2018, with Daniels receiving 503 first-place votes and 2,029 total points in the voting, with Penix getting 292 first-place votes and 1,701 points, followed by Oregon QB Bo Nix (51-885) and Ohio State WR Marvin Harrison Jr. (20-352).
Penix wore a purple suit with the names of his Washington teammates and coaches sewn into the inner lining as an appreciation for those who helped make his Huskies tenure (which of course is still ongoing) so memorable.
On Friday night, Penix was named the winner of the Maxwell Award, which also honors the best all-around player in college football.
Penix leads college football with 4,218 passing yards and has thrown for 33 touchdowns and 9 interceptions (plus 3 rushing touchdowns) in leading the Huskies to a 13-0 record, Pac-12 championship and No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoff.
Penix is only the second Huskies player to be named a Heisman finalist (and highest finisher), along with defensive lineman Steve Emtman, who finished fourth in 1991.
Penix is 24-2 in two seasons at Washington after transferring in from Indiana. In that short time, he is already fourth in program history in career passing yards (8,859), third in 200-yard passing performances (25) and touchdown passes (64) and holds five of the Top 10 single-game passing yard performances, including the program record of 516 yards against Arizona in 2022.
