SEATTLE – Jake Browning has been every bit the player, both on and off the field, that Chris Petersen believe he would be when he recruited the four-star quarterback out of California.
Battling off a late – relatively speaking, elite QB recruits often have a fast-tracked timeline to make an early commitment – offer from Alabama in early March 2014, and after Browning made his final unofficial visit to Cal eight days later, Petersen had his guy.
Browning, a 6-2 prospect out of Folsom High School (Folsom, Calif.), set the national record for career touchdown passes by a prep athlete by finishing with 229 in three seasons (46 games).
His collegiate numbers don’t hold a candle to the Madden video game level that he produced at Folsom. Granted, that should come as no surprise, because it wasn’t what led to the pairing on Montlake.
Petersen was the second and fourth coach to offer Browning out of HS, doing so first at Boise State and then again at UW, separated by offers from Utah and Washington State from the Conference of Champions.
If you are building the ideal O.K.G. (Our Kind of Guy), look no further than Browning.
