Oregon cold-cocks Huskies, Appleby

Chamberlain Oguchi's 22 second-half points led the 7th-seeded Oregon Ducks to a upset win over the twelfth-ranked and second-seeded Washington Huskies Thursday evening at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The loss ended an eight-game winning streak for last season's PAC10 Tournament Champions and sent the Dawgs home to await Selection Sunday and seeding for the NCAA tournament.
Oregon led 10-7 at the 14-minute mark, but back-to-back threes by Brandon Roy and Joel Smith gave the Huskies a lead they didn't relinquish until 7:50 left in the second half.

Washington was took a 18-12 lead at 10:15 on Jamaal Williams' jumper. A short time later, Oregon point guard Aaron Brooks shocked the Los Angeles crowd with an intentional forearm to the face of Washington's designated three-point shooter Ryan Appleby.
Appleby was knocked down and was immediately rushed to the locker room with blood rushing from his nose and mouth. Brooks was immediately ejected and will miss the next game with a "fighting" foul. Appleby was able to return in the second half with ugly looking upper lip and cotton in his nose. The Stanwood, Washington native, and PAC-10 Newcomer of the Year, was never effective after the return, attempting only two shots; missing both.
Brandon Lincoln, replacing Aaron Brooks, had seven of the Ducks next 12 points keeping the Ducks close for awhile.
The Huskies seemed energized by the attack, going on a 16-4 run, stretching their lead to eleven at half time, 41-30. PAC-10 Player-of-the-Year Brandon Roy was on his gane with 18 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists before the intermission. He was perfect on his three 3-point attempts and held the hot-shooting Oguchi scoreless.
Washington was still full of adrenaline as they started the second stanza and at 15:33 had pushed the lead to 14 points, 51-38 on Bobby Jones' lay in off a Justin Dentmon assist. Perhaps, the rush the Dawgs got after Appleby's injury was starting to wear off, the Huskies seemed to tire and started making mistakes. Another of Brook's replacements, seldom-used Adrian Selly, made a lay in with an assist by Oguchi. Appleby's missed a three at the 14:47 mark and this was followed by Oguchi's first points of the game. A Jamaal Williams lay in was quickly followed by another Oguchi three and the Washington lead was down to seven.
The Huskies had the lead back to nine when Oregon went into a zone at the 10:20 mark. A little over a minute later, Selly hit a three, followed by an Ivan Johnson lay in and free throw. Thirty-seconds later, Oguchi hit his third three.
Roy countered with a lay in, but Oguchi came back with a couple of free throws and a couple of more three's sandwiched around another two points for Jamaal Williams. Oregon led 64-61 with 6:13 left, and the Huskies seemed indecisive. Dentmon and the Duck's Ivan Johnson traded lay-in's A couple of Roy free throws narrowed the lead to two with 4:29 remaining. That was as close as Washington would get.
A Brandon Roy three was immediately followed by another Oguchi triple and the Ducks lead was seven with just 1:53 on the clock. The Dawgs pulled to within four at on Roy free throw and a Bobby Jones dunk. Washington scored just two points the rest of the way as Oregon made 7 of 8 free throws in the final 1:19.
Oguchi led Oregon's scoring with 22 points, all in the second half. He had six threes. Malik Hariston had 20, and Ivan Johnson, who sat on the bench in Oregon's win over Washington State, had 16 points on 7 for 9 shooting with five rebounds.
The magnificent Roy had 30 points, five rebounds and four assists for the UW. Jamaal Williams added 15 points, while Bobby Jones had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Huskies shot just 43.5% from field, and an uncharacteristically low 66.7% from the free throw line. Oregon shot well, 49.2%. They were only 9 of 27 from behind the arc, but hit them down the stretch. Washington was 4 of 5 on three's in the first half, but went 1 of 8 in the second. Roy was 4 of 7 for the game, but the rest of the Dawgs went 1 for 6. The badly, swollen Ryan Appleby attempted only one of his specialties in the second stanza. Washington out-rebounded Oregon 36 to 28.
Oregon's 84-73 victory broke a string of five consecutive losses to the Huskies, and keeps alive Oregon's hope of making the NCAA Tournament by winning the PAC10 Tourney Championship. Oregon plays California, a winner over USC, in the semi-finals. The winner takes on the prevailing team in the other semi-final between regular season conference champion UCLA and fourth-place Arizona.
