Texas safety Diesel Gordon commits to Washington as latest 2023 addition

It has been a good week already for Washington. The Huskies will head into a busy official weekend having already added two more commitments in the 2023 class. Wednesday, Texas defensive back Diesel Gordon became the latest member of the group after picking UW after an unofficial visit to Seattle last weekend.

Gordon picked the Huskies over offers from Utah, Arizona State, Colorado State, Connecticut and others.

He is the second recruit to commit to Kalen DeBoer's program this week joining in-state defensive end Jacob Lane, who gave the program his pledge on Monday. Gordon, who plays at Seguin High School in Arlington, Texas, is expected to come in as a safety for the UW defense with co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Chuck Morrell being the one who led his recruitment for the staff.

The process came together quickly between Gordon and the Huskies after he picked up his offer less than a month ago before taking an unofficial visit over the weekend.

He represents the third defensive prospect in the class for UW after an early run on offensive commitments highlighted by four-star receiver Rashid Williams.

Along with Lane, the Huskies have also added California linebacker Deven Bryant to the class as well up to this point.

Gordon is a unique member of the recruiting class for UW as he is the first commitment to come from an area away from the West Coast. Lane was the first non-Californian to join the class earlier in the week.

While it isn't rare for the Huskies to add recruits from Texas, Gordon's commitment could be another sign that DeBoer and the new coaching staff will look to build stronger connections to the state after adding Houston-Lamar safety Jaivion Green earlier in the year as a member of the 2022 class.

Washington has signed at least one recruit from Texas in all but one recruiting class since 2017.

The Huskies currently have the 63rd-ranked recruiting class according to Rivals and are currently tied with Utah for the seventh-best class in the Pac-12.
