SEATTLE – Signing Day has all but officially moved to the 72-hour window in mid-December for Chris Petersen and Washington.
After the Huskies received 15 of the 21 expected National Letters of Intent before 9 a.m., Wednesday began as expected for the reigning Pac-12 Champions. Five of the remaining six sent their NLI in by 10:30 a.m., leaving one commit still open to flipping away from UW.
That recruit, four-star athlete (Jacob) Asa Turner from Carlsbad, California (Carlsbad HS), has been heavily considering Notre Dame over the past several months. Turner, one of an even dozen four-star prospects in the Huskies class, picked the Huskies over the Fighting Irish on July 11.
While they wait for a final decision from Turner, the UW staff formally welcomed the other 20 recruits to the Husky family Wednesday morning. Defensive line coach Ikaika Malloe, who signed one of if not the best classes in program history for the position group this year, added four more members to the “DLO”.
Under the same umbrella as Petersen’s “O.K.G” (Our Kind of Guy) mantra for the program as a whole, Malloe has made an emphasis to have the DL be a family. Not just look or sort of feel like one.
For senior Jaylen Johnson, who was committed to Boise State at the time when Petersen left for UW back in Dec. 2013, he has seen the difference between Malloe and Jeff Choate. Both coaches preached the same message in their own unique ways, but Johnson did note one key.
“It’s more of a family atmosphere. Coach Malloe loves having us at his house and his family is great,” Johnson told TheDawgReport.com on Tuesday, wearing a black t-shirt with the ‘DLO lettering stenciled across the chest.
“So it’s more us just spending time together. No matter what happens, good or bad, we always got each other’s back. Just like a family. So that’s the reason why we’re able to play so well.”
